All About Warfield Square!

Community Leader Laquanda Fields and Warfield Square resident Yndyiago McElroye take us through the process of becoming a resident and share what it means to them to be a part of this community.

Warfield Square is finally open! The new housing development in the EMMA neighborhood from Home Leasing is up and running with 72 units.

Warfield Square the newest Home Leasing property. Home Leasing is a private, family-owned company whose mission is to improve the lives of the residents and communities they serve. Home Leasing centers on affordable housing and community development. This makes them ideal candidates to develop Warfield Square, a high-quality housing development that encourages economic mobility of its residents. Home Leasing fosters long-term goals to reduce regional poverty in the City of Rochester.

Warfield Square is named for the Warfield family who worked hard to build up the EMMA neighborhood. Vernice Warfield, who passed away in August 2017 at the age of 102, was a hugely influential figure in Rochester for decades, fighting both racial and gender inequality. Reverend Warfield was one of the first African American students at the University of Rochester. In the mid-'60s, she helped start the Urban League of Rochester and FIGHT (Freedom, Integration, God, Honor, Today) in order to help her community recover from the 1964 uprising through employment equality. Vernice proved her devotion to her community at every turn, even inviting local children in need into her home to learn life skills. By naming the housing development in Reverend Warfield's honor, EMMA remembers its history and those who dedicated their lives to make the community stronger.

The Warfield Square complex provides one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments and townhomes to qualifying residents. Each apartment is equipped with a full kitchen, dishwasher and abundant storage. Warfield residents also have access to onsite laundry facilities and a fitness center. The monthly rent includes all utilities. This system is built from financing and assistance from federal, state and local government programs, providing beautiful, high-quality homes to those who qualify. Located right on East Main Street, the community is close to the RTS bus line and great Rochester attractions.

Warfield Square has also partnered with Hillside Family of Agencies to ensure that 16 of its units will be offered to individuals with developmental disabilities for supportive housing. Hillside has also provided a café, private offices, and program space on location at Warfield.
